WHAT JEWELRY WOULD AUSTEN’S CHARACTERS BE WEARING TODAY ?

At the fall regional JASNA-NY meeting, the 100 or so participants divided into discussion groups. Each group was given names of two Austen characters and asked to describe what jewelry they would own/wear if they were alive today, based on their personalities and financial resources. The same characters were given to more than one group; sometimes the two groups’ answers were similar and other times they were very different.Reprinted below (in alphabetical order) are some of the inventive, clever, and amusing answers that were devised.

Charlotte Collins
The two groups saw Charlotte in gold: A gold locket from Asprey’s, a simple gold chain with a simple gold pendant.

Georgiana Darcy
One group viewed Georgiana as a hip teen, wearing tattoos, belly button piercing, and other modern jewelry popular with teens. The other group saw her as an understated young lady wearing a simple bangle bracelet with her initial, tiny diamond earrings from her grandmother, and a pearl necklace from her father for her 16th
 birthday.
                                                                            >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Fanny Dashwood
Both groups agreed that Fanny is a showy ostentatious person (a Hedge Fund wife). One group saw her wearing jewelry from Cartier: layers of gold rope necklaces, oversized, clunky, ostentatious but valuable and trendy. The other group agreed that she would be wearing very showy earrings – dangling (probably in debatable taste).  She would also be wearing showy pins (brooches)--Paloma Picasso for sure.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh
Again both groups agreed that Lady Catherine would be wearing quality jewelry – a bit showy but expensive and beautiful. The first group felt that she would shop at Cartier or buy multistrand Mikimoto pearls with a platinum/diamond clasp, a 5-carat canary yellow diamond ring, or other Estate jewelry. The other group saw her in items of great value possibly obtained from a Sotheby’s Auction since she is a collector of fine jewelry, a  star sapphire maybe.Lady Penelope Elliot Group one saw Lady Elliot wearing ostentatious jewelry made from zircons, while the other group saw her shopping at Harry Winston, Bulgari, and Tiffany.

Elinor Ferrars
Participants viewed Elinor’s taste and purse differently. One group felt that she would wear a set of pearls from Mikimoto or classic Tiffany, while the other group saw her wearing thrift shop purchases (pearls) or buying Native American Jewelry (tied with a leather strap).Lucy SteeleBoth groups saw Lucy in cheap knock-offs--showy garish, and vulgar.  Claire’s is her store where she would buy chandelier drop earrings and trendy ankle bracelets.  She would have multiple ear piercings and a tattoo on her lower back.

Emma Woodhouse
The two groups agreed that Emma would wear high-end diamond sets from Cartier and Harry Winston, or she would wear understated pearls and diamonds – all classy from Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels.  Herfavorites would be a tennis bracelet, a college signet ring, diamond studs, and gold hoop earrings with a small pearl.
